The 911 Water Filter Mission is made possible through the cooperative efforts between Clearbrook, Florida State Firefighters Association and the Cajun Commissary.
January 31st 2020, the city of Summerville, Georgia was notified by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency that the water quality testing from the city's Raccoon Creek Water Treatment Plant showed high levels of perfluorooctane sulfonate and perfluorooctanoic acid. These chemicals are used to make materials that are resistant to water, grease or stains including; carpet glue, clothing, fabric for furniture, non-stick cookware, paper packaging for food, firefighting foams and other materials.
Exposure to unsafe levels of PFOA/PFOS concentrations through drinking water may result in health effects including developmental effects to fetuses during pregnancy, cancer, liver effects, immune effects and thyroid effects.(1)
Currently the city of Summerville has advised its residents not to use the municipal water for drinking or cooking, and local veterinarians have advised against giving the water to pets and livestock. Bottled and tanked water is being provided but that is not a long term solution for the community. The complete dependence on single use plastic water bottles can lead to secondary environmental issues regarding plastic waste disposal.
Realistically, the water decontamination and clean up process may take up to 12 months, which is why water filtration is the best solution for the residents affected by this water crisis.
Clearbrook manufactures water filters specifically designed to remove PFOA and PFOS contaminants. Our joint goal is to make them available to the Fire Stations, schools, municipal offices, businesses, residents of Summerville, and the surrounding affected communities.
The Cajun Commissary and the Florida State Firefighters Association are actively seeking sponsorships and community collaboratives to help us provide water filters to the most at risk homes; housing the elderly, disabled, pregnant women, and young children.
The water filters are currently available for emergency purchase at humanitarian relief pricing for Georgia zip codes using the PROMO CODE: SGA25 through the Cajun Commissary Store.
